Thai or Balinese massage — which to choose?
Thai and Balinese massage are our two most popular rituals — and two completely different experiences. Here's how to choose.
It's one of the most common questions when booking: Thai or Balinese massage? Both are authentic and effective, but they differ in technique and feel. Here's a quick comparison to help you decide.
Thai massage in a nutshell
Performed on our massage table, clothed and without oils. Based on pressure along the sen lines and yoga-style stretching. It tends to feel energising and firmer, a good pick for stiffness and tension. Read more in our guide to classic Thai massage.
Balinese massage in a nutshell
Performed with warm oils, with long, flowing movements, acupressure and elements of reflexology. It's exceptionally soothing and also cares for the skin. Details in our guide to Balinese massage.
The key differences
| Feature | Thai massage | Balinese massage |
|---|---|---|
| Oils | No — performed dry, clothed | Yes — warm oil over the whole body |
| Technique | Pressure along the sen lines and yoga-style stretching | Long, flowing movements, acupressure, elements of reflexology |
| Character | Energising, intense | Soothing, flowing, “gliding” |
| Feel afterward | Body stretched out, energised | Deep relaxation, calm |
| Skin | No skin-care effect | Moisturised and nourished by the oils |
| Clothing | Comfortable treatment clothing | Bare, oiled skin (always covered with a towel) |
| Best for | Stiffness, tension, desk work | Deep relaxation, a romantic session for two |
When to choose Thai massage
When you feel stiff, have limited movement, or need to “stretch out” your body after sitting or training. For stubborn tension, reach for the strong version, and for pure calm — the relaxing one.
When to choose Balinese massage
When you're after deep relaxation, aromatherapy and skin care, and firm stretching isn't for you. It's also a popular choice for a romantic session for two.
You don't have to pick one forever — many people switch massages depending on their needs: Balinese for relaxation, Thai for loosening the body. In a couples massage, each person can choose a different one.
