Japanese Shiatsu massage — acupressure, point by point

Shiatsu (Japanese: shi — fingers, atsu — pressure) is a Japanese technique of rhythmic pressure with the thumbs and palms, performed on our massage table, fully clothed and without any oil. Instead of stroking — precise, static point-by-point work. A session from 60 minutes costs 249 PLN. Available at Tera Thai in Gdańsk and Gdynia.

What this massage involves

Japanese Massage – Shiatsu

The therapist shifts their body weight onto their thumbs, palms and elbows, pressing successive points along traditional lines running through the back, neck, limbs and feet. Each press lasts a few seconds — static, rhythmic work that's surprisingly deep despite lacking the sweep of a classic massage.

The treatment takes place on our massage table, in loose, comfortable clothing — no oil, no undressing. That makes Shiatsu the best choice for anyone who feels uncomfortable in the classic oil-massage setting but wants real work on tension.

Shiatsu is sometimes confused with Thai massage — both take place on our massage table, fully clothed, but Thai adds intense stretching and elements of passive yoga, while Shiatsu focuses purely on point pressure. You'll also find a comparison on our blog.

The treatment step by step

  1. Diagnosis by touch — the therapist “reads” tension along the back and limbs before starting to press.
  2. Static pressure with the thumb or palm on a single point, held for a few seconds.
  3. Moving along the energy line to the next point, keeping a steady rhythm.
  4. Alternating work on both sides of the body, mindful of symmetry.
  5. A gentle stretch of the limb or joint to close out work on a given area.

Step by step

What a visit looks like

1. Consultation. A short conversation about any discomfort and especially tense areas — before you even change.

2. Preparation. The treatment takes place in comfortable clothing on our massage table, without oil; a shower and fresh towels are available on site. Every massage also begins with a brief foot-washing ceremony.

3. Massage. The therapist works with hands, elbows and knees along energy lines, gradually increasing pressure. You can ask to change the pressure at any moment — one word is enough.

4. Afterwards. A moment of rest and a glass of water. The static pressure of Shiatsu can still be felt for a few hours afterward.

Safety

Contraindications and preparation

We advise against Shiatsu in cases of fever and infections, fresh injuries and inflammation, thrombosis, and the first trimester of pregnancy — firm point pressure calls for caution here. For chronic illnesses please get your doctor's approval beforehand. Full list in our contraindications guide.

Come in comfortable, loose clothing — this massage is performed fully dressed, without oil. Tell the therapist about any spots that are especially sensitive to pressure. After the treatment, give your body a moment before jumping into intense activity.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

  • No — we perform Shiatsu on our massage table, in loose, comfortable clothing, without any oil. Just come in an outfit that doesn't restrict movement; you can also change on site.

  • Point pressure can feel distinctly noticeable — especially where tension is real — but it shouldn't cause pain that makes you tense up. We agree the pressure during the consultation and you can adjust it during the session with one word.

  • If you want stretching and “loosening up” the whole body, choose classic Thai massage. If you prefer precise, calm work on tension points without intense stretching, Shiatsu will suit you better. Both take place on our massage table, fully clothed.
