When to consider a neck massage
- Morning neck stiffness lasting longer than 15 minutes
- Limited range when turning your head left and right
- A tight neck and shoulder blades at the end of the day
- A feeling of pressure at the base of the skull
- A “burning” tension feeling after a day at the computer
Where neck pain comes from
The most common cause is a prolonged, static posture at the computer or phone: head jutting forward, immobile shoulders, shallow breathing. The trapezius, levator scapulae and suboccipital muscles become overworked, and the neck gets stiff and sore.
A second group of causes is stress and nighttime jaw clenching, which can keep the neck tense even during sleep. A third is the lingering effect of old injuries, compensated for over years.
Massage won't replace ergonomics or physiotherapy for a herniated disc. It lets the neck and shoulders relax, and after a session it's usually easier to turn your head freely.

Regularity and ergonomics
If your neck stiffens regularly, a 60–90 minute session every 2–3 weeks is a good rhythm, with screen breaks during the day. Also see: massage for shoulder pain, massage for headaches and our article massage for back and neck pain.
Frequently asked questions
-
Shiatsu works point by point on tsubo along the neck and occiput — best for clear “knots” of tension. Thai massage adds stretching and work across the whole shoulder girdle — better when stiffness also involves the shoulders and chest. We'll help you choose during the pre-treatment consultation.
-
A good rhythm is a session every 2–3 weeks for the first 2 months, then once a month. After a visit your neck usually feels looser, but with daily desk work the tension comes back, so regular visits matter.
-
If neck pain comes with numbness in the hands, dizziness, reduced grip strength, or the pain appeared after an injury — get a medical diagnosis first. We massage for everyday muscle tension and stiffness, not fresh injuries.
