How to prepare for a massage — 10 practical tips

A good massage starts… before you walk into the room. A few small things can turn a pleasant session into a truly restorative experience.

It doesn't take much to get the most out of a massage — just a few simple things to keep in mind. Here are ten proven tips, especially useful if you're heading to your first massage.

Before your visit

1. Hydrate

Drink water during the day before your massage. Well-hydrated muscles are more elastic and respond better to the therapist's work.

2. Eat light

Something light 1–2 hours before your visit works best. Avoid both a heavy meal and coming in completely hungry.

3. Skip the alcohol

Give alcohol a miss on massage day — it makes relaxation harder and can heighten fatigue afterward.

4. Arrive a few minutes early

A 5–10 minute buffer lets you change calmly, catch your breath, and start the session already settled instead of rushed.

5. Take a quick shower

If you can, freshen up before your visit — it's a matter of comfort, for you and your therapist.

In the room

6. Dress comfortably

For Thai massage, we work in loose clothing that we provide. For oil massages, you undress to your comfort level — you're always properly covered with a towel.

7. Mention any conditions and preferences

Tell your therapist about injuries, pain, pregnancy, oil allergies, or areas you'd rather avoid. Also say what pressure you like — it's your massage.

8. Breathe, and put the phone away

Silence your phone and let yourself do nothing. Slow, deep breathing helps muscles relax and deepens the effect.

Don't be afraid to speak up mid-session

If the pressure is too strong or too light, you're cold, or something feels uncomfortable — just say so. A small adjustment makes the whole session more enjoyable.

After your massage

9. Drink water and take a moment

Have some water after the treatment and don't rush straight back into things. A few quiet minutes lock in the relaxed state.

10. Plan for regularity

A single massage relaxes you, but consistency is what delivers lasting effects. A rhythm of every 2–4 weeks works well for most people.
