Massage after running — runner's recovery

Calves like rock, a tight IT band, tired feet? For runners, Thai massage (stretching the hamstrings and hips) and Balinese massage (long strokes on the calves, IT band and glutes) work best. The therapists at Tera Thai in Gdańsk and Gdynia know exactly where to invest your 90 minutes.

Does this sound familiar?

A runner's warning signs

  • Stiff calves right after getting out of bed
  • Tension along the outer thigh on downhills or in the second half of a run
  • A feeling of “shortened” hamstrings — a shorter stride
  • Tight glutes and piriformis
  • Tired feet after a long run
How it works

A runner's anatomy

Running means thousands of repetitive impacts on the same structures. The hardest-working areas are: the calves and Achilles tendons, the iliotibial (IT) band (a knee stabiliser), the glutes and piriformis, and the feet.

Massage relaxes the areas that work hardest when you run. With an injury or pain that keeps getting worse, see a doctor first.

Optimal strategy: a massage during your deload week (every 3–4 weeks of your cycle) and one full massage 7–10 days before race day. Don't plan a deep massage 2 days before a marathon.

In practice

Massage in your race plan

During a training block: a session every 3–4 weeks in your lighter week. Before a race: a full massage 7–10 days out, nothing deep after that. After a race: 3–5 days off, then a calm, relaxing massage. Also see massage after the gym and massage for athletes.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

  • Get a full, deeper massage at least 7–10 days before race day. In the final week, only very light work — after a deep massage, muscles need a few days to regain full spring.

  • Work on the calves and stretching the hamstrings usually leave your legs feeling looser and lighter. If the pain is localised at the Achilles tendon and getting worse, get a diagnosis first — it could be tendinopathy.

  • Both. A roller works on-demand on surface layers; massage reaches deeper, includes hands-on work on structures you can't roll (piriformis, deep calf muscles), and gives you a proper rest too.
