What to do after a massage? 7 simple rules to make the effect last longer

After a massage, drink some water and give yourself ten or fifteen minutes of calm before you rush on. After an oil massage you can shower at the salon or leave the oil on your skin. After a firmer massage, skip heavy training until the next day, and keep the evening quiet. If anything worries you the next day, write to us.

At Tera Thai every session ends with a moment of rest at your own pace and a glass of water. You can shower on site, and towels are provided as standard. The rules below cover what happens after you leave the salon. We recommend them to our guests in Gdańsk and Gdynia.

A plan for the rest of the day

WhenWhat to do
Right after the massagea moment of rest and a glass of water; a shower at the salon if you like
The first hoursa calm walk instead of an important meeting, water or herbal tea
Until the next dayafter a deep tissue or sports massage, no heavy training; walking, stretching and yoga are fine
In the eveninga quiet, screen-free evening and an earlier night
The next daynotice how your neck, shoulders and back feel, and remember it for your therapist
In 2–4 weeksyour next visit, if you like to come regularly

The first hours after your treatment

1. Drink water

Have a glass of water right after your massage and keep drinking regularly for the rest of the day. After intensive muscle work you simply feel better when you're hydrated. A herbal tea works just as well.

2. Don't plan a sprint

If you can, avoid scheduling an important meeting right after your visit. A short, unhurried walk lets you ease back into your daily rhythm without abruptly breaking the relaxation.

3. A warm shower, whenever you like

After an oil massage your skin stays lightly oiled. You can shower at the salon or leave the oil on for a few hours. It's a matter of preference, not rules. We describe the oils we use in our article on massage oils: coconut, argan and aloe.

4. Skip the intense workout

After firmer work, like a deep tissue massage or a sports massage, give your muscles up to a day off from heavy loads. A walk, stretching or yoga are perfectly fine.

Slightly “sore” the next day?

After a firmer massage your muscles may make themselves felt for a day or two, much like after a workout. It's a common, temporary reaction. Drink water and move at an easy pace. If anything concerns you, write to us or tell your therapist at your next visit.

In the evening and the following days

5. Go to bed earlier

Many of our guests say they sleep exceptionally well after a massage. Make the most of it with a calm, screen-free evening.

6. Notice what changed

Pay attention to how your neck, shoulders or back feel the day after. That is the best guidance for your therapist at the next session: tell her what you liked and what felt too firm or too light.

7. Plan your next visit

If you like to come regularly, a rhythm of every 2–4 weeks works for most people. We cover it in our guide on how often to get a massage. If you visit regularly, ask at reception for a loyalty card: your fifth massage is 50% off.

Where these tips come from

These are practical tips from everyday work in our salons, not medical advice. Before every massage we ask about contraindications; we list them in our guide to massage contraindications, and the rules for visits are in our terms. If you're still planning your visit, see how to prepare for a massage, and if it's your first time, read about your first visit.
